The Formula
Area conversion uses linear scaling factors relative to the square meter, the SI unit of area. Each unit has a fixed conversion factor to square meters. To convert from unit A to unit B, multiply the input value by the ratio of the two factors.
Variable Definitions
Square Meter
The SI unit of area. The area of a square measuring one meter on each side. Used worldwide for room sizes, construction, and land measurement.
Square Foot
The US customary unit of area. The area of a square measuring one foot on each side. Used for real estate, construction, and HVAC in the US.
Acre & Hectare
Acre (43,560 ft²): the traditional US land unit, originally the area a yoke of oxen could plow in one day. Hectare (10,000 m²): the metric land unit, 100 m × 100 m, used worldwide for agriculture and forestry.
Square Mile & Square Kilometer
Square mile (640 ac): used for large US land areas, counties, and states. Square kilometer (1,000,000 m²): used for geographic and national land areas worldwide.

Common Applications
- Real estate: converting between square meters and square feet for property listings across countries
- Construction: calculating floor area, wall area, and roofing area in m² or ft² for materials estimation
- Land measurement: converting between acres, hectares, and square miles for farms, parks, and development
- Geography: comparing country and city sizes in km² or mi² for data analysis and education
- HVAC: sizing heating and cooling systems based on floor area in ft² (US) or m² (metric)
- Agriculture: measuring crop fields in hectares (Europe/Asia) or acres (US/UK) for yield calculations
Common land and building area units compared. A hectare is roughly 2.5 acres.
Understanding the Concept
Area measurement is fundamental to real estate, construction, agriculture, and geography. The square meter (m²) is the SI unit of area, defined as the area of a square with sides of one meter. A typical parking space is about 15 m², and a one-bedroom apartment may be 50 m². The square foot (ft²) is the standard in the US for real estate — a typical American house ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 ft². The acre is an ancient unit dating back to medieval England, originally defined as the area a yoke of oxen could plow in a day. Today, an acre is exactly 43,560 ft² or about 4,047 m². The hectare (10,000 m²) was introduced with the metric system and is the standard for land measurement worldwide — a perfect square 100 m on each side. Countries use different units: US real estate uses ft² and acres, UK uses m² for buildings but acres for land, and most other countries use m² and hectares. For very large areas like national parks or countries, square kilometers (km²) or square miles (mi²) are used. Understanding these conversions is essential for international property investment, construction projects, and land management.
