TDEE for Athletes — Why You Need More Calories Than You Think

6 min read May 9, 2026By TheCalcUniverse Editorial

Elite endurance athletes can burn 5,000-8,000 calories per day. Here is how to calculate your true needs as an athlete and avoid under-fueling.

Athlete TDEE Is Significantly Higher

Standard TDEE calculators only go up to "very active" (1.9x BMR), which may not capture elite athlete needs. Professional cyclists during the Tour de France burn 6,000-8,000 calories per day. Marathon runners burn 3,500-5,000 on training days. Even recreational athletes who train 1-2 hours daily often have TDEEs of 2,800-3,500.

Signs You Are Under-fueling

Chronic fatigue, poor recovery, frequent illness, decreased performance, irritability, loss of menstrual cycle (women), and constant cravings all signal you may not be eating enough relative to your TDEE. RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) is a serious condition caused by chronic under-fueling relative to exercise energy expenditure.
