Percentage Calculator Guide: How to Calculate Percentages for Everyday Life

5 min read May 9, 2026By TheCalcUniverse Editorial

Percentages are everywhere — discounts, tips, taxes, grades, and statistics. This guide shows you how to calculate percentages for everyday situations and how our calculator makes it instant.

Three Types of Percentage Calculations

Most percentage problems fall into three categories. Find what percent of Y is X (e.g., what percent of 200 is 50?). Find what is X% of Y (e.g., what is 15% of 80?). Find the percentage change (e.g., what is the percent increase from 50 to 75?). Our calculator handles all three instantly.

The basic formula is: percentage = (part / whole) × 100. But you can also work backward: part = (percentage × whole) / 100. Our calculator handles both directions and also calculates percentage increase and decrease between two numbers.

Common Uses

  • Shopping discounts: A $80 jacket at 25% off saves you $20. You pay $60.
  • Restaurant tips: 15% of a $65 bill is $9.75. 20% is $13.00.
  • Sales tax: 8% tax on a $40 purchase adds $3.20 for a total of $43.20.
  • Test scores: 42 correct out of 50 questions = 84%.
  • Investment returns: A $10,000 investment growing to $12,500 is a 25% gain.
  • Weight loss: Losing 15 lbs from 180 lbs is an 8.3% reduction.

Percentage Change: Increase vs Decrease

To calculate percentage change, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease. For example, a stock going from $50 to $60 is a 20% increase. Rent dropping from $1,500 to $1,350 is a 10% decrease.
